- If you close the app during onboarding, sign back in and you will resume where you left off.
02 · Onboarding
Onboarding
How to complete your profile setup after your first sign-in. Onboarding has three steps. You must complete all required fields before you can use Discover.
Step 1: Your running
Tell RLS about your running habits:
- Distance units: choose km or mi (you can change this later in Settings).
- Neighbourhood: select your area (required).
- Average pace: optional; choose a pace bracket or “I don’t know”.
- Weekly distance: optional.
Tap Continue when you are ready.
Step 2: About you
- Date of birth: you must be 18 or older.
- Gender and sexuality: used for matching and optional profile display.
- What are you looking for?: select at least one: Running mates (connect with other runners for training and friendship) or Dates (connect with runners who are open to dating).
Tap Continue.
Step 3: Almost done
Add a profile photo so other members can recognise you.
- Tap the photo area to choose from your camera or photo library, then tap Add photo & finish.
- A photo is required: you cannot finish signing up without one. You can change it later from Edit profile.
When you finish, you are taken straight to Discover.
Quick tips
Quick tips
- Your neighbourhood is required in step 1: you cannot proceed without it.
- Choosing Running mates and/or Dates in step 2 controls what connection types appear when others discover you.
04 · Discover
Finding runners, Mate, Date, Sprint.
How to find runners, coaches, and pacers.
Discover tabs
| Tab | What you see |
|---|---|
| Discover | Swipeable cards of other runners |
| Coaches | Searchable list of running coaches |
| Pacers | Searchable list of pacers |
Tap the filter icon (tune) on any tab to refine results. When filters are active, you may see a note: “Filters active for this tab.”
Discover tab: finding runners
Each runner appears on a full-screen card showing their photo, name, age, area, pace, badges, and more. Tap the card to open their full public profile. Runners with a profile photo appear before those without one for the whole stack (including after partner offer cards).
Action buttons
At the bottom of each card:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Skip (X) | Pass on this runner; they leave your stack |
| Mate | Send a Running Mate request |
| Date | Send a Running Date request: only shown if they are open to dates and you are compatible with each other for dating (gender and sexuality preferences, both ways) |
| Sprint | Send a Sprint (super-like): shown exactly when Date is shown |
Mate is always available. Date appears only when both of you could date each other: for example, two straight men will only see Mate for one another, even if both are open to dates. Sprint is tied to Date: if Date is hidden, Sprint is hidden too.
Swipe gestures
- Swipe right: same as Skip (pass).
- Swipe left: opens an overlay to choose Mate, Date, or Sprint.
- Short swipes snap back: you need a deliberate swipe to trigger an action.
Partner offer cards
Every so often a local partner offer card appears in the Discover stack (labelled LOCAL PARTNER).
- Tap the offer or its main call-to-action to open it.
- Tap Skip, or swipe right, to dismiss the ad; the runner underneath is unchanged.
- Swiping left on a partner card does nothing (the card springs back).
When you connect
| Outcome | What happens |
|---|---|
| Skip | Card disappears; no notification to the other person |
| Mate / Date / Sprint sent | Your request is sent; the card leaves your stack |
| Mutual match | A full-screen overlay appears: “It’s a match!” with options to Send a message or Keep discovering |
| Intent mismatch | They already sent you a different type of request. A bottom sheet explains their request and your choice, then offers options such as Accept as Mate, Accept Date/Sprint, Just be Mates, or Skip |
The same mismatch sheet appears when you Connect from a run, group, or event participant list (or someone’s public profile) and your choice does not match their pending request. Choosing Just be Mates accepts the connection as a Running Mate.
Sprint limits
- Free accounts: 1 Sprint per day.
- Premium accounts: 5 Sprints per day.
If you have used your daily Sprint, you will see a message inviting you to upgrade to Premium.
Filters
Open the filter panel to adjust maximum distance, age range, and other discovery preferences.
You can save your filter choices as defaults in Edit profile under Discovery defaults.
Empty state
When there are no more runners to show, you will see “No more runners to discover.” Tap Refresh to load more profiles.
Coaches tab
Coaches appear in a scrollable list, not a swipe stack.
- View Profile: open their full public profile.
- Enquire: send a first message about their coaching services (or Message if you are already connected).
Use the search bar to find coaches by name, and the filter icon for coach-specific options (specialism, price, delivery mode, and more).
Pacers tab
Works the same way as Coaches, but for members who offer pacing services.
- Enquire opens a draft message: “Hi, I'd love to run with you as my pacer…”
- View Profile shows their pacing pace, max distance, and rates.
Skip vs Decline vs Block
These are three different actions: do not confuse them:
| Action | Where | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Skip | Discover card or public profile | Pass temporarily; they may appear again later |
| Decline | Connections (incoming request) or public profile | Permanent: they will not appear in your Discover feed again |
| Block | Connections match menu or public profile | Ends the connection; neither of you can interact |
Quick tips
Quick tips
- Tap a card to read someone’s full profile before connecting.
- If you are interested in coaching or pacing, use the Coaches or Pacers tabs: not the runner swipe stack.
- Left-swipe on a runner card is a quick way to open the Mate / Date / Sprint chooser.
05 · Connections
Connections
How to manage incoming requests, outgoing requests, and matches.
Connections tabs
Open Connections from the drawer. You will see three tabs:
| Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Received | People who have sent you a request |
| Sent | Requests you have sent that are still pending |
| Matches | Accepted connections you can message |
Each tab shows a count badge.
Connection types
Requests are labelled by type:
| Type | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mate | Running mate request |
| Date | Running date request |
| Sprint | Sprint (super-like) request |
| Enquiry | Coach or pacer enquiry |
Received: incoming requests
- Accept as [Mate/Date/Sprint/Enquiry]: accept their request; they move to Matches.
- Decline (X): permanently remove them from your Discover feed. You will be asked to confirm: “They won't appear in your Discover feed again. This can't be undone.”
Free vs Premium: hidden requests
On a free account, only your 3 newest incoming requests are fully visible.
Older requests appear blurred with the message “You have hidden admirers!” and an option to Unlock RLS Premium to see everyone who wants to run with you.
Empty state: “No received requests”. “When someone sends you a connection request, it will appear here.”
Sent: outgoing requests
Shows requests you have sent that are still waiting for a response. Each card displays “Pending their response” with an hourglass icon.
Empty state: “No sent requests”. “Pending requests you've sent will appear here.”
Matches: accepted connections
- Tap Message to open the conversation.
- Tap the more options icon to Block to end the connection permanently.
Empty state: “No matches yet”. “When you both connect, your matches will appear here.”
Quick tips
Quick tips
- Pull down on any tab to refresh.
- Opening Connections marks connection-related notifications as read.
- After accepting a request, check Messages: your new conversation is ready.
06 · Messages
Messages
How to chat with your connections and enquire with coaches and pacers.
Inbox
Open Messages from the drawer or tap the Messages icon in the top bar. Your inbox shows direct conversations with accepted connections, run chats, and group chats in one list.
Tools at the top:
- Search: “Search conversations…”
- Filter: All, Unread, or Read
- Type filter (filter icon): All types, Direct, Run chats, or Group chats
- Sort: toggle between newest and oldest first
Each row shows an avatar, name (or run/group title), a type badge (Run / Group / connection type), last message preview, and unread count.
Empty states: No conversations: “No messages yet”; match with someone, join a run, or chat in a group. Filtered empty: “No unread conversations.” (or similar for Read / type filter)
Conversation thread
Tap a conversation to open the full chat. Run and group threads show each sender’s name and avatar on incoming bubbles.
- Type a message and tap Send.
- Use the emoji picker to add reactions to messages.
- You can edit your own messages (within eligibility rules).
- When you open a thread, messages are marked as read.
Empty thread: “Say hello and get the conversation started!”
Run chats
When you join a run, you share a run chat with the other participants.
- Open it from Run detail to Chat, or from Messages (look for the Run badge).
- You see the full history while you are joined (including messages from before you joined).
- The chat locks for sending after the run ends (or immediately if the run is cancelled). You can still open the thread to read older messages.
- After the run, use Rate & Connect from run detail, the Past tab, or a notification; not from the locked chat composer.
Group chats
Community group chats work like run chats, with a Group badge.
- Open from Group detail to Chat, or from Messages once someone has sent the first message.
- Threads stay open for sending while you are a member (there is no end-of-run lock).
- Leaving the group removes your access; rejoining restores the full history.
Enquiring with a coach or pacer
When you tap Enquire on a coach or pacer profile, you are taken to a draft message screen.
- A prefilled message is ready to edit.
- Coach: “Hi, I'm interested in your coaching services…”
- Pacer: “Hi, I'd love to run with you as my pacer…”
- When you send your first message, they are added to your connections and the conversation opens.
From a match
When you get a match on Discover, tap Send a message on the match overlay to jump straight into the new conversation.
Quick tips
Quick tips
- You need an internet connection to send and receive messages. If you are offline, a retry bar appears.
- Unread count badges on the top bar update in real time.

RLS expects all members to treat each other with respect.
- Community Guidelines: Settings to About
- Code of Conduct: Settings to Account to Code of Conduct (opens in your browser)
If you need mental health support, see Settings to Account to Wellbeing Support.
Coach and pacer enquiries
Coaches and pacers are real members offering services. Use Enquire to start a conversation: never share payment details or personal information in chat until you are comfortable. Meet in public places for in-person sessions.
Meeting runners safely
- Meet in well-lit, public locations for first runs.
- Tell a friend where you are going.
- Trust your instincts: use Block and Report if something feels wrong.
Quick tips
Quick tips
- Skip on Discover is not the same as Block: Skip is temporary; Block is permanent.
- Decline on an incoming request permanently removes that person from your Discover feed.

Troubleshooting and FAQ
Answers to common questions.
I did not receive my verification email
- Check your spam or junk folder.
- Make sure you entered the correct email at registration.
- Wait a few minutes and try again.
- If it still does not arrive, contact support via Settings to Contact us.
I cannot sign in
- Make sure you verified your email after registering.
- Try Forgot password if you have forgotten your password.
- If you signed up with Google or Apple, use Continue with Google or Sign in with Apple in the app instead of email/password.
I cannot see someone on Discover
They may not appear because:
- They have turned off Visible in Discover in Settings or Edit profile.
- They are outside your distance or age filters.
- You previously declined or blocked each other.
- They have been removed from the platform.
Try adjusting your filters or tapping Refresh on the Discover screen.
I used my Sprint for today
- Free accounts: 1 Sprint per day. Try again tomorrow, or use Mate or Date instead.
- Premium accounts: 5 Sprints per day. If you have hit the limit, wait until the next day.
I can only see 3 connection requests
This is the free-tier limit. Older requests appear blurred under "You have hidden admirers!" Upgrade to Premium to see all incoming requests, or wait: the 3 visible slots show your newest requests.
My messages are not sending
- Check your internet connection.
- Pull down to refresh the conversation.
- If you see an offline bar, wait until you are back online and tap Retry.
How do I change my neighbourhood or pace?
Go to Edit profile (from your profile page or Settings). Update My Neighbourhood or Running details, then tap Save.
How do I become a coach or pacer?
In Edit profile, scroll to Coach and pacer. Toggle I am a coach or I am happy to pace others, fill in the required fields, and tap Save. Make sure Visible in Discover is on so you appear in the Coaches or Pacers tab.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings to Delete account. Confirm the dialog. Your profile is hidden immediately and RLS will email you to complete the deletion process.
How do I sign out?
- Settings to Sign out, or
- Profile menu (top bar) to Sign out, or
- Drawer to Sign out
I am not receiving notifications
- Check Settings to Notifications: make sure the relevant toggles are on.
- Check your device notification permissions for the Run Love Sprint app (in your phone's Settings app).
- Make sure you are signed in: push notifications require an active session.
What is the difference between Interested and Going on events?
- Interested means you are curious about an event.
